Brighteners are used especially high brightness Paints, resulting in their strongly fluorescent appearance under UV illumination. Paint brightness is typically measured at 457 nm, well within the fluorescent activity range of brighteners. Paint brightening (internal or in a coating). Optical brighteners are additives that paint manufacturers put into paints in order to make them look brighter. They are also called optical brightening agents (OBA), or sometimes “artificial whiteners.”

These chemical compounds absorb light in the ultraviolet and violet region (usually 340-370nm) and re-emit light in the blue region (typically 420-470 nm).
