Detergent whiteners are optical brighteners which are synthetic chemicals added to liquid and powder laundry detergents to make clothing appear whiter and brighter, and thus cleaner. Optical whitening agents give a whitening effect to fabric and are dyes that absorb light in the UV and violet region of the electromagnetic spectrum.
