Detergent Brighteners are optical brighteners which are synthetic chemicals added to liquid and powder laundry detergents to make clothing appear whiter and brighter, and thus cleaner. Optical whitening agents give a whitening effect to detergents that absorb light in the UV and violet region of the electromagnetic spectrum. OWA is used to create a whitening effect, thus making white looks whiter and is a cost-effective method to enhance the whiteness of detergents. Optical brighteners also called fluorescent whitening agents (FWAs) are hydrophilic water-soluble compounds used in laundry detergents. Optical brighteners are chiefly anionic diamino stilbene (DAS) or distyryl biphenyl (DSBP) derivatives displaying a low aquatic toxicity.
