Overview of Phosphoric Acid

Introduction to Phosphoric Acid

Phosphoric Acid is a colorless, or transparent crystalline solid odorless phosphorus-containing inorganic acid. The pure solid melts at 42.35 °C and has a density of 1.834 g / cm3. The prefix ortho- is used to distinguish the acid from related phosphoric acids, called polyphosphoric acids. Orth phosphoric acid is a non-toxic acid, which, when pure, is a solid at room temperature and pressure. Phosphoric acid (also known as orthophosphoric acid or phosphoric(V) acid) is a mineral (inorganic) and weak acid having the chemical formula H3PO4. Orthophosphoric acid refers to phosphoric acid, which is the IUPAC name for this compound. Phosphoric acid is a sequestering agent which binds many divalent cations, including Fe++, Cu++, Ca++, and Mg++. Phosphoric acid appears as a clear colorless liquid or transparent crystalline solid. Liquid is usually an 85% aqueous solution.

Occurrence of Phosphoric Acid

The raw form of Phosphoric acid is mined from the phosphate rocks. A purer form is made industrially using white phosphorus. The pure form of this acid is generally found in a less abbreviated form and a crystalline solid state. Generally, Phosphoric acid is colourless, odourless, syrupy, and non-volatile. Phosphoric acid is an inorganic acid, and its formula is H3PO4. This acid’s formula includes one atom of phosphorus, four oxygen & three hydrogen atoms.

Salts of Phosphoric Acid

Phosphates are the salts of phosphoric acid. The 3 most vital phosphates are specified below:

(1) Ammonium phosphates

Mono ammonium dihydrogen phosphate is a common phosphate salt of phosphoric acid. Diammonium hydrogen phosphate is also prevalent. These phosphates are created when anhydrous ammonia combines with phosphoric acid. The most common usage of these phosphates is in the agricultural industry as fertilisers.

(2) Calcium phosphates

Calcium phosphates are produced by the act of sulphuric acid on the phosphate rock. It is also called superphosphate. This kind of phosphate also finds applications in the agricultural industry. It is accountable for the following activities:

  • Giving rise to better healthy plants.
  • Encouraging durable root growth.
  • Enhances ripening.
  • Ensures greater yields as it helps as a quick-acting fertiliser.
  • It helps support fruit, root, and seed crops.
  • It is for removing flowers, trees, cuttings, and shrubs.

(3) Sodium phosphates

The fraction of phosphoric acid with a concentrated solution of sodium hydroxide in specific proportions gives rise to sodium phosphates. The product is in the form of solid crystals. Monosodium dihydrogen phosphate, Trisodium phosphate, Disodium hydrogen phosphate, and Disodium pyrophosphate are some commonly found sodium phosphates.

Different Uses of Phosphoric Acid

Phosphoric Acid Use in Rust Removal

The reddish brown deposition on iron and steel needs strong chemicals for its abstraction. Among the different acids, phosphoric acid is the most frequently used in the removal of rust. The reaction commonly includes the conversion of reddish ferric oxide to a black-coloured compound called ferric phosphate. This black substance can be simply removed, and the metal stays safe.

Phosphoric Acid Use in Personal Care

It is extensively used in the production of several personal care products. For example, cleansing products, fragrances, bath products, hair care items, dyes, nail products, skincare products, and makeup are some of the most prevalent uses of phosphoric acid. It helps control the pH and bacterial activity in personal care products.

Use of Phosphoric Acid in Agriculture

A large portion of phosphoric acid goes to the agricultural industry. Almost 80% of the phosphoric acid produced is engaged in fertiliser production. It is also used as a flavouring agent in poultry food.
